PS2 interface is usually used for connecting magnetic card to additional keyboard interface without need for some special PC programming. Imagine paying something with your VISA card and PC software with reader that handles transaction. USB is the same. I think that each card reader implements it's own RS232 protocol and there is no standard packet format. It is just used for easy usage in embedded systems or PC input.

I would stay with Wiegand if I were you. What I can do is promise to check a little and see what's new in this area and check if that is the best option for AvrCo.

HID Wiegand info:
http://www.hidcorp.com/products/wiegand

Wiegand to RS232 in assembler:

RFID in depth:
http://meag.tele.pw.edu.pl/pubs/pdf/RFID-ToolBox-Thesis.pdf
http://www.rfid-handbook.de/do…ndbook.pdf
http://www.rfid-handbook.de/downloads/index.html

Implementing any of specific RFID standards limits users and narrows the choice a lot. With Wiegand you just have to buy a compatible reader and that's it. It can be a magnetic card reader, RFID 125kHz reader, RFID in MHz range, or whatever, it doesn't really matter. You can talk to any of them.

Single interrupt line and 2 digital input pins are used to receive Wiegand 26 bits message (if I remember well there are 37 and 44 bits Wiegand messages also, but it would not be too hard to implement automatic recognition, or let the user specify expected bit message length), and few digital outputs control leds and beeper. Message is not interpreted, just received.

I vote for Wiegand. :ja:

Hi Avra,

yes Wiegand interface seems very clear and not difficult. I'll implement an
interface into AVRco as far as I can get hold such a reader. It seems not easy
to order obe.

I don't know exact prices, but from specifications I would say that these are the HID's cheapest (check to be sure):

magnetic card:
http://www.hidcorp.com/prod_detail.php?prod_id=42
http://www.hidcorp.com/prod_detail.php?prod_id=44

rfid:
http://www.hidcorp.com/prod_detail.php?prod_id=3
http://www.hidcorp.com/prod_detail.php?prod_id=25
http://www.hidcorp.com/prod_detail.php?prod_id=56
http://www.hidcorp.com/prod_detail.php?prod_id=98

Googling German web for these models might help.

Make sure that ID cards are compatible with reader and ask if Wiegand is already build into base model or as an option (some models might have a separate product number for Wiegand included).

Btw. I have just run into this for one of RFID models: "Adjustable Wiegand output data lengths from 1 to 128 bits". This might be usefull info for AvrCo implementation.

The reason for that might be that such a big company does not work with end users directly, only with distributors. Try to search your local web for AIDC companies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automated_identification_and_data_capture) that sell access control and time attendance solutions with HID readers.

Quick german links:
http://www.ringdale.de/product…efault.htm (240 eur for HID proximity reader - it looks like ProxPoint Plus)

http://www.getronik.de/france/…ement.html (HID MiniProx and ProxPoint Plus)

Hi Avra,

I finally got in contact with HID Gerrmany. Very kind people.
They promised me to get 2 free samples of RFID readers
and RFID cards for development purposes. Great!
