The ATTiny261/461/861 series has a universal serial interface (USI). Can AVRco use this as a standard UART? In the standard driver manual I see the section "3.11.5 Advanced Functions for Controller with USART" - does this apply to the USI interface?

Hello,

sorry, the USI is a very poor UART and is not supported.

So there's no way to get a hardware UART on the Tiny861?

Hello Bill,

some years ago a user send us two sample programs how to use the AVR-USI.
We never checked them nor used them. I attach these sources for your usage.
But no support, sorry.

btw.
Why don't you use another small AVR providing a real UART? Mega88 for example.
Or the XMega8-16-32E5. Very cheap, very fast. UARTs, SPI, TWI, ADC, DAC etc.
Same price as Tiny861 at Mouser.

I wanted a low-pin-count chip with UART. I see the Tiny841 has a UART and is only 14 pins - I'll go with this one. Thanks, Rolf.

ok, I understand.
But the TINY861 has 32 pins in SMD and the XMega32E5 has also 32 pins in SMD.

I switched to talking about the Tiny841 - it is available in 14-SOIC.
